What if you could replace a shopping cart full of hazardous household cleaning supplies with a handful of less toxic items you might already have in your home? It’s not a fantasy, but a reality - one that’s not only good for the environment but your wallet as well.

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources will host free Green Cleaning classes in Murrieta on Wednesday, Aug. 15 to teach residents how to easily make cleaning products that are environmentally safe and effective.

Green Cleaning teaches residents the benefits of using sustainable, environmentally sound cleaning practices. Presenters will explain how to simplify your cleaning products, save money, and make your home a safer environment.

The class demonstrates how easy it is to make cleaning products from ingredients most people already have in their home, such as vinegar, baking soda and rubbing alcohol. Participants will receive a booklet containing basic recipes to make their own cleaning products at home. The result is simple cleaning products that leave less chemical residue behind on surfaces where food is prepared, children crawl or pets walk.

The free how-to Green Cleaning classes begin at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Murrieta Public Library, 8 Town Square in Murrieta.

The department provides these free classes in an effort to reduce waste and help preserve valuable space in the county sanitary landfill, and to reduce the amount of chemical waste residents bring to household hazardous-waste collections for processing and disposal.
