Lake Elsinore district announces school starts Aug. 20

Lake Elsinore Elementary Unified School District announced Thursday that all students will return to school on Monday, Aug. 20. The start of the 2018-19 school year was postponed one week from Aug. 13, following an emergency meeting of the Board of Trustees on Aug. 10.

To date, the Holy Fire has burned nearly 23,000 acres in the Cleveland National Forest, causing mandatory evacuation of thousands of Lake Elsinore residents, and others in the Horsethief Canyon community and unincorporated areas.

Because LEUSD schools remain closed to students and the public until Aug. 20, all previously scheduled back to school night events were canceled this week. School administrators issued notices to parents and guardians via text, voicemail, and email.

As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, nine schools plus the Heald Academy have been inspected and certified for immediate staff occupancy, enabling those site employees to return to work to prepare for opening day next week.

Certification is a formal requirement for occupancy under the Holy Fire disaster recovery process. As a result of the Holy Fire emergency declaration, schools become ready for certification and occupancy following interior and exterior cleaning, replacement of air filters, restoration work, and a rigorous inspection regimen.

The school year will not be extended, pending a waiver from the California Department of Education (CDE) as a result of Holy Fire disaster declarations. This means regular school breaks (winter and spring), as well as graduation dates and LEUSD’s last day of school, will be unchanged.

Registration help and enrollment services are available at the District’s Enrollment Processing Center, from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Enrollment Processing Center is open weekly but is closed on Fridays and is located at 545 Chaney St., Bldg. C, Suite B.
