RIVERSIDE - A man accused of gunning down a Perris resident sitting in his car pleaded not guilty today to a murder charge.

Arthur Daniel Laguna, 31, is charged in the July 31 slaying of 26-year-old Jacinto Placencia in the 21700 block of Markham Street, near Carroll Street, in Mead Valley.

Along with the murder count, Laguna faces sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Emma Smith scheduled a felony settlement conference for Sept. 19 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The defendant is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Ben Ramirez, deputies investigating reports of an assault with a deadly weapon found Placencia shot several times inside his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Sheriff's investigators have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack.

Witnesses provided deputies with a description of the alleged shooter, and Laguna was tracked down six hours later in the 20200 block of Hunter Street, where he was taken into custody without a struggle, Ramirez said.

The victim died that night at Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

Laguna has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
