California gold lures settlers

When James Marshall discovered gold near Sutter’s Mill on the American River in 1848, it sent shock-waves across the country. Californios and Mexican miners were quick to head to gold country. Some in the east may have at first been skeptical, but not for long. Once President James Polk’s announcement of the discovery was published, the rush was on. Horace Greeley’s later admonishment to “Go west, young man, Go, west” seemed to be the sentiment across the continent and beyond.
