Water district warns customers about testing scam

Last updated 9/6/2018 at 3:12pm

PERRIS - Eastern Municipal Water District customers were advised today to be wary of private companies offering unnecessary water-testing services.

According to the Perris-based utility, staff were recently made aware that solicitors had contacted customers about having water tests run on their plumbing with the possible objective of selling the recipients water treatment systems.

The EMWD characterized the practice as a scam.

According to officials, representatives from unnamed companies have left door hangars and mailers promoting water quality tests, which can be expensive.

"These companies often make false claims, use deceptive sales pitches and other scare tactics,'' the agency stated. "The language on materials provided by these companies may include references to 'the district' or 'the water company' -- wording that some customers may mistake for EMWD. These organizations are not affiliated with or endorsed by EMWD.''

Officials said the district conducts 40,000 water quality tests every year to ensure that supplies meet federal drinking water standards.

Anyone with concerns was asked to contact the EMWD at (951) 928-3777.

The district encompasses Hemet, Mead Valley, Menifee, Moreno Valley, Perris, San Jacinto, the Temecula Valley and Winchester.
