LAKE ELSINORE - Three people were killed today in a two-car head-on crash just east of Lake Elsinore.

A gold-colored Honda sedan and a silver sedan collided in the middle of state Route 74 where the four-lane highway leaves the Lake Elsinore city limits and goes into the unincorporated community of Meadowbrook about 1:20 p.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to witnesses, one of the vehicles caught fire immediately after the crash near the intersection of SR 74 and Trellis Lane.

Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the scene within a few minutes and extinguished the blaze, then proceeded to extricate the victims.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were withheld pending family notification.

The highway was shut down in both directions at 2 p.m. to permit the CHP and sheriff's deputies to conduct an investigation and clear the wreckage.

A SigAlert was issued because of the ensuing miles-long traffic jam.

Eastbound motorists were being turned around and routed back into Lake Elsinore, while westbound motorists were being turned back toward Perris.

The closure was expected to remain in effect until 4 p.m.

The cause of the collision was not immediately known.
