Fire damages oil drum, causing small spill in Winchester

Last updated 9/10/2018 at 2pm

WINCHESTER - A spot fire Monday near a Winchester intersection damaged an oil barrel, causing a leak that raised concerns about hazardous materials exposure.

The blaze was reported about noon at Briggs and Matthews roads, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Several engine crews were sent to the location and encountered a roughly 500-square-foot space burning. Firefighters knocked down the flames in 15 minutes, but according to reports from the scene, a 50-gallon drum filled with oil was compromised, causing the fluid to spill onto the surrounding soil.

The county Department of Environmental Health was summoned to assess the spill and determine what actions might be necessary to clean it up.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
