HEMET - A motorist who was allegedly under the influence when he crashed his BMW head-on into another car in Hemet, leaving the other driver with major injuries, was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail on Sept. 10.

Marcos A. Forestal, 28, of Burbank was arrested on Sept. 9 and booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of felony DUI resulting in injuries.

According to Hemet police Lt. Eric Dickson, the crash happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Warren Road, just north of Devonshire Avenue.

Dickson alleged that Forestal was driving his BMW over the speed limit south on Warren when he veered into opposing traffic lanes.

A woman at the wheel of Chrysler sedan was unable to steer clear of Forestal's car, and the two vehicles collided in the northbound lanes, according to the lieutenant. The Chrysler caught fire, but patrol officers arrived within a couple of minutes and immediately doused the flames with their fire extinguishers, he said.

Fire crews extricated the woman, whose name was not released, from the Chrysler and airlifted her to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley. Dickson said she's stable and expected to recover.

Forestal was found walking around the wreckage and arrested without a struggle after officers determined that he was allegedly intoxicated, according to Dickson.

The suspect was examined at a nearby trauma center and then taken to jail.
