HEMET - A 65-year-old bicyclist was critically injured on Monday, Sept. 17 when he was struck by an SUV in Hemet.

The victim, whose name was not released, was hit about 6:40 a.m. on Florida Avenue, near Palm Avenue, according to Hemet police Sgt. Dan Reinbolt.

The bicyclist was going eastbound on Florida, along the south curb, when the SUV approached him from behind, Reinbolt said. He said the driver was preparing to pass the bicyclist when the victim apparently "turned left and entered the middle of the traffic lane, where he was struck by the vehicle.''

The motorist, a 20-year-old Hemet-area resident, immediately stopped and called 911, according to Reinbolt.

The cyclist was taken to a trauma center, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected, and the driver was not arrested after being questioned, Reinbolt said.
