National Park Service provides grant to preserve California battlefield

WASHINGTON – The National Park Service announced the distribution of a $39,000 American Battlefield Protection Program grant to the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Mission Indians in California for a research and documentation project.

The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Mission Indians will use the grant to create a historic overview of the 1846 Temecula Massacre to support long-range preservation planning for the battlefield. The massacre was the direct result of the Battle of San Pasqual, the bloodiest conflict in California during the Mexican-American War.
