SAN JACINTO - A sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries while trying to break up a melee that erupted outside of San Jacinto High School and his alleged attacker was arrested, sheriff's officials said on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The fight broke out at about 1:30 p.m. Friday on Tiger Lane between North Ramona Boulevard and Santa Rosa Street, just outside of San Jacinto High School, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported.

The fight originally involved two female students, according to a statement from the San Jacinto Unified School District.

When he came upon the altercation, the deputy -- a school resource officer -- ordered a group of students who had gathered to disperse but they did not comply, sheriff's officials said.

A short video showing a portion of the incident was posted on social media and shows a male student tackling the deputy to the ground while he is trying to break up the fight.

The video then shows a man shoving the male teen off the deputy, who gets to his feet and chases the teen into traffic on Tiger Lane, where another struggle ensues before the video ends.

Sheriff's officials said the teen was eventually arrested and the deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries, though it was not clear if he was hospitalized.

"SJHS ... will be reviewing all video and dealing appropriately with anyone involved in creating an unsafe environment for students and staff,'' district officials said.
