Anza World War II veteran recognized by France for efforts in the war

Dr. Richard D. Schmitz of Anza receives the National Order of The Legion of Honor in the rank of Chevalier from Christophe Lemoine, consul general of France in Los Angeles, at a private ceremony Sept. 20, at the Veterans Memorial in Murrieta Town Square Park. The honor is the highest merit France bestows on citizens and foreign nationals.

With his family by his side, Anza World War II veteran, Dr. Richard Schmitz, accepted the National Order of The Legion of Honor in the rank of Chevalier from Christophe Lemoine, the consul general of France in Los Angeles, during a special ceremony held, Thursday, Sept. 20, at Murrieta's Town Square Park.

Schmitz, who was a private first class during his time in France in World War II, sat solemnly beside three other Southern California recipients of the honor, Pfc. Forrest Huffstetler, Staff Sgt. Alexandro Tejada and 1st Lt. Muriel Engelman, as several city and state officials, along with...
