ANZA - A fire that broke out on Tuesday, Oct. 9 on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation in Anza scorched roughly an acre before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 1:20 p.m. on the north side of state Route 371, near Cahuilla Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

A battalion chief at the scene said several engine crews encountered flames burning in light brush within sight of the Cahuilla Creek Motocross arena. However, the property was not threatened, with southwesterly winds blowing the fire away from the facility and other structures.

A water-dropping helicopter was summoned to make drops on the brusher, but the crew was sent back to Hemet-Ryan Airport after the fire's forward rate of spread was stopped at 1:53 p.m. The blaze was declared completely contained a short time later.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
