Many of the 700 Valle Vista Elementary School STEAM students and their parents enjoyed an evening of fun and science education Thursday, Sept. 27, hosted by volunteers from Abbott Vascular laboratories from Temecula.

Valle Vista Elementary Principal Christine Ramirez held and open house at the school to encourage parent participation to support their children's STEAM or science, technology, engineering, art and math studies. The STEAM program in the Hemet Unified School District is designed to interest young students in the most needed occupational fields of today. She called upon Abbott laboratories and the Abbott Fund that offers to school around the world to interest children in science and inspire them to pursue scientific careers.

Hundreds of parents and students participate in a Valle Vista Elementary School STEAM Open House and Abbott Vascular's Science School event, Sept. 27, in Hemet.

As a result, 35 Abbott volunteers from the Temecula facility arrived bearing new backpacks and water bottles for all the participating students, a program of interactive science and fun with a series of activities and contests including "Balloons and Skewers," "Pompom Packaging" and "Tool Clues," to teach and help students better understand scientific knowledge. The program ended with the volunteers handing out the backpacks to the students and new insight into what the science and technology world offers.

"We are showing them that science and math and just learning new ways of learning things can be fun, and good for the earth, and good for the community and good for the company. It's sparking their interest in science," Sheila Adams, Abbott Vascular project manager and volunteer, said.
