The Paloma Valley High School Brigade performed a tribute to Jake Drost prior to Friday night's home football game.

According to several reports and confirmed by a post made on the Paloma Valley High School Facebook page, a freshman student collapsed Friday, Oct. 5 during an NJROTC practice and later died at an area hospital.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the news that one of our Paloma students, Jake Drost, has passed away," the post read. "During ROTC practice this morning, emergency services were called to our campus to attend to the student's medical needs. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away."

Calls made to the Perris Union High School District administrative offices have yet to be returned.

"Out of respect for the family's privacy, we cannot offer details," the post continued. "We ask you to hold this family in your thoughts as they face the tragic loss of their child. Grief counselors are on campus to help students, staff, and parents deal with this tragic loss."

Reports said that Jake was born missing a ventricle and had endured several heart surgeries during his lifetime. A report from the Press-Enterprise indicated that Jake bent down to pick up a shoe he lost during training with his ROTC unit and died from cardiac arrest, according to his father, Jeff.

After school staff members performed CPR on Jake, he was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

After his passing, fellow NJROTC students were notified of Jake's passing, along with a briefing for school staffers and an announcement was made to the entire student body.

The school performed a moment of silence prior to the Wildcats' 7 p.m. home football game that night.
