Dear Constituents and fellow Veterans,

Mr. Harry Ramos is again running for City Council of Murrieta, District 2. Given the circumstances of his departure when Mayor of Murrieta, I too am surprised by his candidacy. In light of Mr. Ramos’s sordid past, I looked into his candidacy. True to the character that we have come to expect from Mr. Ramos, I have found some disturbing information. As a Sergeant Major United States Marine Corps Ret… and active member of the veteran community in the Inland Empire, I feel I have a duty to share that information.

Mr. Ramos states that he enlisted in the Marine Corps after 9/11/2001. He also stated that he had served during the military operations of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. For those of you that do not know, the first Gulf War was fought from 1990-1991. More specifically, Desert Shield was from 1990-1991 and Desert Storm was in 1991. Based on Mr. Ramos’s birthday of 12/31/1976, he would not have been eligible to enlist in the Marine Corp during the first Gulf War because in 1990 Mr. Ramos was 13 to14 years old.

As a combat veteran I find it inconceivable that any man would take credit for operations he was not a part of or lie about his military service. I am proud of the fact that I am a Marine, but I would never take credit for the work of the Marines that came before me. What Mr. Ramos has done is not only reprehensible. His actions are the exact definition of stolen valor.

Mr. Ramos was questioned about the inconsistencies in his statements regarding his military service at the candidacy forum Oct. 3, at Vista Murrieta High School. In response, he said that a volunteer was responsible for the error and that it had been corrected on his website a month ago. His website is non-operational, there has been no correction to the statements that any member of the public can access. He also claimed to have contacted “many local veteran’s groups” to offer an apology. I can say with certainty that he has not contacted the VFW Post 4089 nor the American Legion Post 852, those are the two largest local veteran groups. I have also provided a copy of the ballot statement from the City of Murrieta website that Mr. Ramos hand wrote and signed which states the same fabrications of service. Let me reiterate that the ballot statement is handwritten and signed by Mr. Ramos not a volunteer as he stated at the candidate forum.

In a recent article in Californiacitynews.org the writer points out that the other City Council candidates have shied away from commenting on Mr. Ramos’s repeated transgressions. I understand not wanting to run a negative campaign. However, when we do not speak the truth, we become complicit in the lie.

A note to SgtMaj Barragan: With great respect for your rank and service, and for your excellent Letter to the Editor, I still have to differ on one point. There are many fine people in Murrieta who have already had to deal extensively in the past with this issue. Those people are not complicit in anything, in any way. But, as a former Army Sgt, '67-'70, whose duties never involved combat, I know I don't have much room to talk on this subject. Respectfully, Tom Suttle
