Blaze burns on Cahuilla Indian Reservation

Last updated 10/21/2018 at 12:13pm

ANZA – A fire that broke out on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation in Anza Wednesday, Oct. 9, scorched roughly an acre before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 1:20 p.m. on the northside of state Route 371, near Cahuilla Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

A battalion chief at the scene said several engine crews encountered flames burning in light brush within sight of the Cahuilla Creek Motocross arena; however, the property was not threatened, with southwesterly winds blowing the fire away from the facility and other structures.

A water-dropping helicopter was summoned to make drops on the brusher, but the crew was sent back to Hemet-Ryan Airport after the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 1:53 p.m. The blaze was declared completely contained a short time later.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
