The 20th annual Susan G. Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure took place Sunday, Oct. 14, at Town Square Park in Murrieta, and thousands of people came out on a crisp morning to raise money to fight breast cancer.

This year, the event was classified as a "signature event" by the city of Murrieta to provide in-kind services such as waiving up to $5,000 in city permit fees, traffic and police assistance, set up signage, marketing assistance and cleaning and trash pickup as part of its partnership with Susan G. Komen Inland Empire.

The move by the city was to support Susan G. Komen Inland Empire in their goal of exceeding the $320,000 raised at last year's event by reaching the group's goal of $400,000 this year.

Organizers said more than 3,000 survivors, runners and walkers from all over Southern California were expected to attend, but final fundraising totals and attendee numbers were not available by press time.

Many of the racers formed into fundraising teams and showed up in colorful costumes and outfits to celebrate participation, while other groups and families wore matching T-shirts celebrating the lives of friends and families that have been lost to breast cancer, as well as those that have survived the disease.

According to Susan G. Komen Inland Empire officials, more than 2,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
