SAN JACINTO - A vehicle crashed into a roadside feature just east of the Mt. San Jacinto College campus on Tuesday, Oct. 30, triggering a fire that killed the driver.

The fatality happened about 5 a.m. on Alessandro Avenue, just south of the Ramona Expressway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Darren Meyer said the victim, whose name was not immediately released, was headed northbound on Alessandro when the vehicle drifted into opposing traffic lanes, leaving the paved roadway surface and traveling over the shoulder on the west side of the four-lane corridor.

"The vehicle collided with a concrete planter box and subsequently caught fire,'' Meyer said. "The driver was trapped in the wreckage and suffered fatal injuries as a result of the impact and fire.''

Riverside County Fire Department personnel reached the location within a few minutes and doused the flames. No other vehicles were involved.

Meyer said it's unknown at this point whether alcohol or drugs might be factors in the crash, which is under investigation.
