Man convicted of stabbing, killing another man in parking lot to be sentenced

MURRIETA - A Temecula resident who fatally stabbed a 19-year-old man during a dispute in a store parking lot stemming from road rage is slated to be sentenced on Monday, Nov. 19 to 16 years to life in state prison.

James Beckham Fortney, 41, was convicted last month of second-degree murder for the 2017 slaying of Kevin James Rodriguez. Along with the murder count, a Murrieta jury found Fortney guilty of making criminal threats and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

The defense is expected to ask Riverside County Superior Court Judge Charles Campbell for a new trial.

Fortney is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
