Sabine Becker sits with her service dog Balter. Becker is a motivational speaker, sharing her experiences and struggles as a thalidomide survivor.

I first met Sabine Becker Sept. 8, when she was a celebrity judge who presided at the Paws 4 Kids Pallywood Dog Contest, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Temecula Valley. I knew very little about her, except that I had read her bio and understood she had been born in 1962 with very short arms.

At the event, I did not want to charge right up to her and introduce myself, even though having been born without a left hand myself made me feel that she was one of "my people." I knew I would get the opportunity to meet her at some point, but much to my surprise, Sabine walked right up to me and intro...
