MURRIETA - A Vista man who fired a shotgun at a motorist near Anza, then led a sheriff's deputy on a chase into the hills, where he crashed, was sentenced on Thursday, Nov. 29 to five years in state prison.

Adam Ryan Gray, 32, pleaded guilty in September to assault with a firearm and shooting at an occupied vehicle. No charges were dismissed under the plea deal.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Kelly Hansen certified the terms of the agreement and imposed the stipulated sentence.

According to sheriff's officials, the attack happened on the afternoon of Nov. 11, 2017, in the area of Homestead Road and state Route 371, along the boundaries of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation, about 12 miles east of Temecula.

Investigators said that the defendant came alongside another driver on the highway, leveled a shotgun at him through the window and fired. The man was not hit, and a possible motive was not disclosed.

A deputy was immediately alerted to the shooting and spotted Gray's vehicle speeding eastbound on the 371. The defendant turned off the highway as the patrol vehicle closed its distance.

According to investigators, the deputy pursued Gray onto Burnt Valley Road and then onto several dirt roads, going into a sparsely populated area, where the defendant tossed his shotgun out of the driver's window.

Moments later, Gray lost control and crashed into a dirt embankment just east of Kirby Road, according to a sheriff's statement.

He was held at gunpoint by the deputy, who waited until a California Highway Patrol officer arrived before taking him into custody.

Gray suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital before he was booked into jail. The deputy was not hurt.

Gray had no documented prior felony or misdemeanor convictions in Riverside County.
