The huge pine tree is decorated with hundreds of shining Christmas tree lights at the San Jacinto Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District's San Jacinto Regional Park. The tree was officially lit Dec. 1 to start the Christmas holiday season.

A little misty rain and a cold night did not deter residents from attending Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District's annual Christmas tree lighting and Santa visit at San Jacinto Regional Park Saturday, Dec. 1.

Hundreds of Hemet and San Jacinto residents and excited children arrived to see Santa and his elves and a special appearance by Olaf, Walt Disney's favorite snowman from the movie "Frozen." Even the nasty ole' "Grinch Who Stole Christmas" had a part in this year's lighting ceremony, as the movie was shown on the outdoor park screen underneath the lit Christmas trees at 901 W. Esplanade Ave. in San Jacinto.

Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District volunteers hand out cookies to a young visitor at San Jacinto Regional Park's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Hot chocolate and coffee was also served to the guests at the special event, a welcome gift on a cold night.

Both parents and children were delighted, along with the newly crowned 2019 Hemet and San Jacinto Queens and a youth choir from St. John's Lutheran School in Hemet. Valley-Wide Recreation volunteers warmed up the crowds by serving hot chocolate, coffee and cookies to the bundled up visitors.

The biggest cheer came with the lighting of the giant pine tree in the park. It will be turned on at night throughout the Christmas holidays.

The San Jacinto Valley-Wide is hosting a number of other holiday events this month which are open to the public. Valley-Wide Recreation, 901 W. Esplanade Ave., will provide "Breakfast with Santa" at 8 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, with at a nominal $3 per person. The "Gingerbread House Night" will be held at the Valle Vista Community Center, Dec. 11, and at the Marion V. Ashley Community Center, Dec. 13, from 6-8 p.m. both nights; pre-registration is required at (951) 927-6873.
