LAKE ELSINORE - A motorcyclist spun out, crashed and suffered major injuries on the Ortega (74) Highway west of Lake Elsinore on Sunday, Dec. 9.

The crash was reported at 10:21 a.m. at the Tenaja Truck Trail juncture, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The highway was closed in both directions for about half an hour but reopened just before 11 a.m., the CHP said.

The two-lane, winding segment of the highway that carves through the Santa Ana Mountains has been the site of many major and fatal motorcycle crashes.

Motorcycles are insanely dangerous. My own most serious motorcycle accident occurred on a familiar street, at a familiar curve, at a normal speed, when I encountered an un-obvious spillage on the street surface. Suddenly, there was a lot of blood on the street to make that curve's danger more obvious. There is simply no way on earth that a motorcycle rider can ever be safer than someone surrounded by the steel of a car, regardless of driving skill levels.
