Last updated 1/4/2019 at 12:30pm

MENIFEE - A tractor-trailer spilled more than 50 gallons of fuel on Friday, Jan. 4 in Menifee after one of its tanks was punctured, prompting road closures.

The spill was reported about 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of Menifee Road and state Route 74, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

A saddle tank beneath the cab of the big rig was breached, though it wasn't immediately clear how.

Diesel leaked onto roadway surfaces, and fire crews requested that sheriff's deputies close access to southbound Menifee from the highway, as well as a portion of the westbound 74 at the juncture until the petrol could be mopped up, according to reports from the scene.

A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the location to assess and clean up the spill.

There was no word on how long the road closures might be in effect.
