BANNING - An ex-convict caught with a large-caliber rifle, as well as law enforcement gear indicating that he might have posed as a police officer to commit crimes in the Hemet area, was sentenced Jan. 4 to 16 months in state prison.

Geovanny Misael Landeros, 25, of Hemet pleaded guilty in November to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of an assault rifle and parole violations.

Landeros' plea was direct to Riverside County Superior Court Judge Mark Johnson, without input from the District Attorney's Office.

Johnson certified the plea terms today and imposed the sentence that he had stipulated at the time of the defendant's admissions.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Walter Mendez, while deputies were searching the defendant's Fruitvale Avenue home as part of a parole compliance check on the morning of Aug. 2, they seized a semiautomatic rifle and uncovered evidence that he had possibly been engaged in impersonating law enforcement personnel.

Along with a badge and other wearable gear, deputies discovered that Landeros' 2015 white Mercedes-Benz "was equipped with red-and-blue flashing LED lights'' affixed to the front windshield, in the same way an unmarked police vehicle might be outfitted, the sergeant said.

"Investigators believe Landeros may have used these items to commit ... crimes or contact unsuspecting victims (while) posing as a law enforcement officer,'' Mendez said. "These crimes may have gone unnoticed by a potential victim.''

Detectives sought additional evidence of police impersonation but were unable to connect Landeros to any specific incidents.

According to court records, Landeros had prior convictions for assault resulting in great bodily injury, vandalism and driving on a suspended license.
