RIVERSIDE - A man who approached a Riverside County sheriff's deputy with a knife was shot and killed, sheriff's officials said on Sunday, Jan. 6.

The deputy, who was dispatched from the department's Perris Station, encountered the man after an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon call at 9:52 p.m. Saturday in the 17300 block of Kaison Circle in Glen Valley, an unincorporated county area just south of Riverside, according to Deputy Robyn Flores of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

"The deputy contacted the suspect, an adult male, in front of the residence. The suspect, armed with a knife, advanced towards the deputy and a deputy-involved shooting occurred,'' she said.

Emergency personnel attempted to treat the man, but he died of his injuries at the scene, according to Flores.

The man's name and age were withheld, as was the identity of the involved deputy, who was placed on administrative leave per the department's policy.

The Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit was investigating the shooting.
