SAN JACINTO - A 72-year-old man killed in a head-on crash just north of San Jacinto drove into opposing traffic lanes, triggering the wreck that left the other motorist seriously injured, authorities said on Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Chaudhry Zulfiqar of San Jacinto died on impact in the Tuesday night collision on state Route 79, just south of Gilman Springs Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Zulfiqar was headed south on the four-lane highway about 11:10 p.m. when his 2004 Honda Civic drifted to the left, across the open center median.

At the same time, 33-year-old Connie Hill, also of San Jacinto, was traveling northbound on the highway in her 1998 Honda Accord.

Officer Darren Meyer said the Civic steered toward the front of Hill's vehicle before she had time to react, resulting in the head-on crash.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced Zulfiqar dead at the scene.

Meyer said Hill was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment of major injuries. She remains in serious but stable condition.

Neither motorist was carrying passengers, and no other vehicles were involved.

Alcohol, drugs or pre-existing medical disorders have not been ruled out as potential factors in the deadly wreck, according to Meyer.
