Mt. San Jacinto College hosting Black History Month events

Mt. San Jacinto College announced two events scheduled this week that coincide with Black History Month.

The Black History Month Essay Awards Ceremony will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the MSJC San Jacinto Campus Johnson Library, 1499 N. State Street, in San Jacinto.

Students, instructors and families will attend as the top 12 winners of the essay contest are announced. College, middle and high school students will be awarded more than $1,000 in cash prizes for their winning essays.

The MSJC and Umoja Community Black History Month Event will then take place the next evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 inside the MSJC San Jacinto Campus Gymnasium, 1499 N. State Street in San Jacinto.

The event will feature African drummers, dancers, storytelling, music, fun, and food. Umoja is a Kiswahili word meaning unity. The event aims to promote unity within our community and provide a cultural and educational experience for those in attendance.

The public is invited to both free events.
