HOMELAND - An investigation was underway on Wednesday, March 6 into a deadly shooting in Homeland that claimed the life of a 35-year-old man.

Derek Andrew Valdepena of San Bernardino died about 6 a.m. Monday in the 25000 block of Cortrite Avenue, just south of state Route 74, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Steve Brosche said deputies were called to the location, which is roughly two miles west of Hemet, to investigate a shots fired call and found Valdepena dead at the scene from a bullet to the upper body.

Witnesses and potential suspects were immediately detained, and detectives from the sheriff's Central Homicide Unit began questioning everyone, Brosche said. He said that no one had been arrested as of this morning, but investigators also were not searching for any outstanding suspects.

"There is no threat to the public safety,'' the sergeant said.

No other details were disclosed, including what might have triggered the shooting.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.
