PERRIS - Three people were killed and one person was hurt in a fiery head-on crash Saturday, March 16 in Perris, authorities said.

The crash involving two pickup trucks took place at the intersection of Cajalco and Gavilan roads at 5:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

One truck became fully engulfed in flames, the CHP reported. Several people were temporarily trapped in their vehicle. The names of the dead were being withheld pending notification of next of kin. There's no word yet on the gender or ages of the victims.

The Riverside County Fire Department dispatched 10 firefighters to the scene as well as three engine companies. Firefighters were able to free the people trapped in one of the trucks, fire department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

The three deceased victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. The other victim was transported to a hospital for treatment, Hagemann said.

The crash blocked both lanes on Cajalco Road, the CHP said.

The crash was being investigated by the CHP.
