LAKE ELSINORE - Two motorcyclists crashed on Ortega Highway, were seriously injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital on Sunday, March 17, the Riverside County Fire Department said.

The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. on eastbound State Route 74, just west of Ortega Falls, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A motorist at the scene told a CHP dispatcher that the injured victims were lying on the ground, snarling traffic on both sides of the road.

It was unclear what caused the crash, though the highway, which runs through the San Jacinto Mountains, is infamous for its treacherous curves and narrow lanes, and is often the site of serious and deadly motorcycle crashes.

The CHP reported that the roadway was clear by 11:30 a.m, but some congestion lingered.
