Chaparral High School NJROTC dedicates memorial plaque to Chaparral alumnus

Chaparral High School NJROTC gather for a memorial plaque dedication of Chaparral alumnus Carlos Sibayan, March 21. Sibayan was an NJROTC member and graduated from Chaparral in 2012. Sibayan joined the U.S. Navy and was on the USS Fitzgerald when it crashed with a container ship near Japan in 2017. Sibayan was one of seven sailors killed in the collision.

In a moving ceremony, Chaparral High School NJROTC dedicated a memorial plaque to Chaparral alumnus Carlos Sibayan, March 21.

A Fire Controlman 2nd Class, Sibayan, a 2012 graduate of the school and member of Chaparral's NJROTC, was killed while serving in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS Fitzgerald in a collision with the ACX Crystal, a container ship flagged in the Phillipines, off Japan's Izu Peninsula June 17, 2017. He was 23.

Seven Sailors were killed in the collision, which also took the life of Yeoman 3 Class, 25-year-old Shingo Douglass, a 2010 graduate of Fallbrook High School.
