Great Oak starter Michael Shanahan picked up the win over Long Beach Poly, helping the Wolfpack advance to the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

The second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs got underway Tuesday, May 7, and in the Division 3 playoffs it would be the Great Oak Wolfpack finding success against the Jackrabbits of Long Beach Poly High School. Great Oak, the fourth seed in Division 3, turned a close game into a not-so-close game when they scored four-runs late in the game by taking advantage of four hits, four walks and a couple of errors.

Great Oak starter Michael Shanahan allowed just two hits and a run in four innings. Blake Bambrick would pitch in relief and didn't surrender a hit in his three innings on the bump. Offensively Great Oak went ahead in the second inning when Jacob Fisher doubled with one out and scored on Jonah Sebring's single, then two singles, a walk and a Luke Jepsen's sacrifice fly later, that would score junior catcher, Isaiah Lopez, to make it 2-0 in the fourth.

The Wolfpack would score two more runs in the fifth when Oregon commit, Zach Arnold, scored after third baseman, Edgar Rosales, threw the ball away. Senior Josh Paino who would score next on a Lopez ground out. Great Oak scored two more in the sixth, but that's when the fireworks started for Long Beach Poly. Head Coach Brent Lavoie was tossed in the top of the sixth while arguing a call at the plate and that would not shift any momentum for the Jackrabbits.

The Wolfpack (20-9-1) have won eight of their last nine games and seem to have some great momentum as they move on to a quarterfinal showdown Friday, May 10, at Northview High School (15-10). Great Oak's No. 1 starter, Cameron Mabee, will be well rested and with a record of 7-3 on the year and a 1.19 ERA, the ball will most certainly be in his hand. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m. More info on the CIF-SS playoffs can be found at http://www.cifss.org.
