Calvary Murrieta's Ben Sweeton picked up the win for the Warriors with two and two-thirds of shutout pitching against Adelanto in the second round of Division 6 CIF-SS baseball playoffs Tuesday, May 7.

In what was a true David vs. Goliath match-up, the Calvary Murrieta Warriors took down a red-hot Adelanto team in round two action of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs Tuesday, May 7, at Murrieta Mesa High School.

Adelanto (19-9), the co-champs of the high desert's Skyline League, came into the match-up with a 14-1 win in their pocket from first-round action against Aquinas, while Calvary Murrieta took down Hamilton (5-9) of Anza in their first-round game, 10-0.

The Warriors jumped out quick to a 4-0 lead against the Saints, but Adelanto chipped back each inning and scored the tying run in the top of the 7th inning with two outs to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 9th, Calvary Murrieta loaded the bases with one out when Mike Winzen drove in the winning run with a single to right field.

"The boys never panicked or displayed any negative emotion when things went bad," said Dave Dexheimer, Calvary Murrieta's head coach. "The game of baseball has a lot of up's and down's and our players rode the roller coaster with confidence and enthusiasm. Win or lose we felt we honored God with our best effort."

Calvary Murrieta used three pitchers, Adler Stout, Brandon Baker and finally Ben Sweeton to get through the game. Sweeton kept Adelanto at bay, throwing two and two-thirds of shutout baseball for the win.

Brandon Baker was 3-for-5 at the plate, Adler Stout was 3-for-4 and Ian Smith went 4-for-5. Calvary Murrieta had 13 total hits and Adelanto's powerful lineup was held to 9.

Dominic Villalobos, Robert Valdivia and Lee Atkinson collected multiple hits for the Saints.

"Calvary athletics is all about 'Playing the game for the God's Glory,'" Dexheimer said. "I saw nine innings of our Calvary players do just that. They played with heart, passion and intensity without an ounce of selfishness."

The Warriors will play the El Monte Lions in a quarterfinal match-up Friday, May 10, at 3:15 p.m. at El Monte High School. The Lions defeated Trinity Classical Academy 6-5 earlier this week in second round action.
