PERRIS - A brush fire broke out on Wednesday, May 22 in Perris, quickly scorching six acres as winds from a storm cell hampered efforts to contain the blaze.

The brusher, dubbed the "Orange Fire,'' was reported at 12:20 p.m. in the area of Orange Avenue and Perris Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Arriving firefighters encountered flames moving through light brush, away from businesses.

A battalion chief at the scene said a homeless encampment was briefly in the path of the fire, but erratic winds from a fast-moving thunderstorm cell pushed the blaze in another direction.

Sheriff's deputies were summoned to direct traffic along Perris, which became congested with onlookers, according to reports from the scene.

There was no word on what might have sparked the fire.
