Menifee's homeless population decreases

Last updated 5/16/2019 at 6:49pm

MENIFEE – The 2019 Riverside County Point in Time Count found a 22.7% decrease of homeless in Menifee. This year’s PIT count documented 17 homeless individuals in Menifee, five less than last year’s count of 22. This decrease ranks Menifee as having the second lowest amount of homeless in the region.

The annual Point in Time Count, which is spearheaded by the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services, was conducted Jan. 29. More than 700 volunteers spread out to document the incidence of homelessness in communities around the county.

“The city of Menifee has a unified and strategic approach to homelessness,” Councilmember Lesa Sobek of District 3, who participated in the count again this year, said. “With the Responsible Compassion campaign and the Menifee Homeless Task Force, we are combining efforts and streamlining resources so we can have a greater impact with the homeless community in Menifee.”

During the past several years, Menifee has enhanced its efforts to reduce homelessness and its impacts on the community through Menifee’s Homeless Task Force and Menifee’s Responsible Compassion campaign. Partnering with several agencies, the Menifee Homeless Task Force actively engages with homeless individuals in an attempt to persuade them to accept human services and, when possible, housing opportunities. The Menifee Homeless Task Force consists of the Menifee Community Services Department park rangers, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Social Work Action Group and the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard.
