A young black bear was found dead on the center median of Interstate 10 near Cabazon on Thursday, May 23.

CABAZON - According to the California Highway Patrol – San Gorgonio Pass a young male black bear was found dead in the center median of westbound Interstate 10 near Cabazon on Thursday, May 23.

According to the CHP, the young bear was examined by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists and was approximately two years old. It is believed he may have been attempting to find new territory.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that there are between 30,000 and 40,000 in the state of California with a healthy population in San Bernardino area mountains north of I-10.

While population numbers have increased over the 20 years statewide, there is no established population of black bears in the San Jacinto Mountains south of I-10. But rare sightings in the Idyllwild area over the last couple of years my suggest that bears may be migrating into the area.
