MENIFEE - A grass fire that broke out on Wednesday, May 19 just north of state Route 74 in Menifee scorched about an acre before it was knocked down by firefighters.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 2:40 p.m. in the area of Highway 74 and Menifee Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in a quarter-acre space, with a large column of smoke rising over the city.

A battalion chief at the scene complained of "erratic'' winds and worried that the fire might burn toward houses on Varela Lane to the north, prompting him to request additional resources.

However, the blaze was confined to open space and was declared fully contained by 3:40 p.m.

Sheriff's deputies closed one of the two westbound lanes on the 74 approaching Menifee Road to accommodate emergency personnel and steer motorists away from the operation.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
