San Jacinto Unified to break ground on new middle school

SAN JACINTO - On Tuesday, June 18, the San Jacinto Unified School District will hold a ground-breaking event for a new middle school campus for construction at 425 N. Lyon Ave. in San Jacinto.

The school is expected to open in the Fall of 2021 and be the new campus for Monte Vista Middle School now located at 181 N. Ramona Blvd., San Jacinto.

“We began serious planning for a new middle school back in 2012,” stated Michael Collins, Facilities Director for SJUSD. “Our Facilities Master Plan reminded us of the needs at Monte Vista Middle School and the steady enrollment growth in SJUSD all supported this direction."

The purchase of the property where the new middle school campus will be located was finalized in July 2013 and includes enough acreage to also construct a new elementary school, when the need arises. Funding for the property came from Bond Measure V, passed by the voters of San Jacinto in 2006. Then in 2016, voters passed Bond Measure Y with 72.92% approval, which included the description for adding new permanent classrooms, bringing about new construction funds to get the new Monte Vista Middle School project underway.

The District’s master plan notes that of the 48 classrooms on the current Monte Vista Middle School campus, 32 are older, portable construction.

“We always look to ensure equity across our school facilities, and we are very excited to turn plans into reality to have both our traditional middle schools with similar structures,” said Seth Heeren, SJUSD’s Assistant Superintendent of Business Services.

The District’s North Mountain Middle School was constructed in 1999 and primarily has permanent buildings. It wasn’t until 2012 that both middle schools were equal with having gymnasiums, when Bond Measure V funded construction for a gym on Monte Vista Middle School’s current campus on Ramona Blvd.

San Jacinto Unified’s most recent new school was Megan Cope Elementary, built in 2010 on Cottonwood Avenue near Sanderson Avenue. Demographic studies conducted for the district predict that the majority of growth for the community will be towards the west, making the property next to the new middle school campus on Lyon Avenue ready for additional enrollment projections

over the coming years.

HMC Architects designed the new Monte Vista Middle School and will help oversee building under the construction management firm Neff Construction, Inc. Construction bids were approved on June 11, 2019 by the District’s Board of Trustees in the amount of $35,925.

The complete construction project, including furnishings, is expected to be nearly $55 million by the time it’s fully ready for students in 2021.
