HEMET - Hemet revelers caught with bottle rockets, M-80s or any other type of firework could face some blowback.

With Independence Day around the corner, Hemet police and fire officials reminded residents that all fireworks are prohibited within city limits and warned that anyone caught setting off pyrotechnics could face a fine or even jail time.

Authorities said that every year illegal firework use seriously injures people, damages property and creates the potential to spark fires.

"The police and fire departments spend an extraordinary amount of time and resources responding to firework-related incidents that can negatively affect the response times for other serious emergencies,'' the agencies said in a news release.

Even fireworks labeled "safe and sane'' are banned, according to police and fire officials.

Those in possession of illegal pyrotechnics can face citations of up to $500 and can even be arrested.

Various fireworks displays are planned Thursday in nearby cities, including at Ronald Reagan Sports Park in Temecula and at Lake Elsinore.
