Ruff and Ready indeed

John Ruff is the founder of Ruff and Ready Moving and Storage in Temecula.

When John Ruff decided to stop working for other moving and storage companies in 2012 and start his own company with all of $600 in his bank account, he named his new company, "Ruff & Ready Moving and Storage." More than once he heard from friends and acquaintances that having the word "Ruff" as part of the name for a moving and storage company was a negative, given the nature of the business with inherent potential damage to furniture, mirrors, lamps, etc., that plagues most moving companies. John Ruff just brushed off the noise. After all, "Ruff" is his last name.

From those modest beginnings with just one truck, Ruff began networking wherever he could to secure moving jobs, particularly through the local chambers of commerce and the Realtor community. His other early marketing efforts consisted of contacts made through personal networking and reviews on Yelp. These efforts started generating new business. Another group he began networking with were divorce attorneys. It's sad but true that "somebody" is moving.

Connecting with Business Networking International in Temecula was another good move he made. Getting the work was now becoming a bit easier. From there, Ruff realized how critically important it was to build and maintain a solid reputation for high quality service through the creation of a company culture that demanded it from everyone associated with Ruff & Ready. This commitment to "doing the right thing" for employees as well as customers permeates all that they do. Putting others' needs first is his No. 1 priority. The most direct results have been positive word-of-mouth testimonials that began to dramatically increase the business and a growing team of happy employees.

Over the past several years, Ruff and his growing team of 40 members have gone from generating modest revenues of $30,000 annually to more than $3 million last year. With the company's move to larger facilities late last year, that now includes ample storage capabilities, the prospects for continued expansion are strong. It didn't come easy. It was not unusual for Ruff to work 14- to 15-hour days to get the business rolling. While that would be unpleasant for most people, Ruff thrives on work and is nearly addicted to making his business flourish. He likens the hard work and stress of growing his business from nothing into a huge entrepreneurial success in just a few years like that of the formation of a diamond: It takes a lot of pressure to create such a wonderful thing of beauty. Trust me, Ruff has had more than his share of stress and pressure. But his "grateful mindset" helps him to focus on the positive side of things and the ultimate prize: Being the best moving and storage company in the industry.

Born in 1986 at Sharps Hospital in San Diego to hard working parents – his father worked for Frito-Lay for over three decades and his mother just recently retired from Costco after 34 years – Ruffn grew up understanding the vital importance of a strong work ethic. His parents were perfect role models in that regard. When he worked for Costco for several years in their warehouse, Ruff keenly observed how the company treated their customers and employees. That impression had a lasting impact on him.

Ruff's stubborn approach to being more of a visionary and dedicated problem solver who is not afraid to take calculated risks in order to maximize growth potential, rather than be, "the boss," has empowered him to visualize the potential of one day having over 50 trucks and five locations from which to serve the moving and storage needs of his ever-expanding customer base.

As testimony to Ruff's commitment to stellar customer service and high standards of performance for his team, Ruff & Ready Moving and Storage was named Large Business of the Year for 2018 by the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Ruff was named "Most Honorable Character" for Stars of The Valley in 2018 and also nominated as Citizen of the Year by the Murrieta/Wildomar Chamber of Commerce. His company was also nominated as Medium Business of the Year by the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Above all else, Ruff attributes his hard-earned success to his deep faith. While overcoming much throughout his young life, some of which was admittedly self-inflicted, Ruff acknowledges that he is on a mission inspired and directed by a much higher power.

The team at Ruff & Ready Moving and Storage are experienced with all phases of moving. Originally focused on residential moving services, they now offer commercial services nationally as well. They are truly committed to being the most honest and reliable of all the moving companies in the greater Temecula Valley and beyond.
