Be prepared for earthquakes

The July 4 magnitude 6.4 quake that was felt by millions of Southern California residents occurred at 10:33 a.m., 7.5 miles southwest of Searles Valley. At 8:19 p.m., July 5, a larger, magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred in the Ridgecrest area, revealing that the magnitude 6.4 shaker  to have been a foreshock. Both earthquakes have been described by the U.S. Geological Survey as occurring via shallow strike-slip mechanisms. Subsequent seismic activity occurred along two intersecting faults in the Airport Lake Fault Zone.
