Residents warned to be alert to scam seeking 'bond' payments via phone

Con artists claiming to be government agents are contacting Riverside County residents seeking payments over the phone for “bonds” issued because of fraudulent activity, and sheriff’s officials warned call recipients not to fall for the scam.

Sheriff's Sgt. Timothy Brause said that the sheriff’s department has received a number of reports about the racket, which has generally involved individuals purporting to represent the Social Security Administration.

Brause said fictitious “agents” will call victims saying that because of fraud committed using their Social Security number...
