Bank building's mosaic of a 'Ramona' Outdoor Play scene share a piece of Hemet history

This mosaic mural of a scene from the "Ramona" Outdoor Play is displayed on the face of the former Chase bank at 105 N. Cawston Ave. The building is for sale by private owners.

Hemet Valley art lovers and historians have an icon to behold on the older Chase bank building that is now up for sale at 105 N. Cawston Avenue by the owners. The colorful mosaic is a scene from the internationally known outdoor play "Ramona," which has been presented each spring at the Ramona Bowl since 1923.

The mosaic's art, depicting Ramona and her lover Alessandro with their newborn baby being blessed in a chapel, was created by mid-century muralist Millard Sheets who gained fame with his 80 murals placed on the front of Home Savings banks across the west. The tiny mosaic pieces were...
