RIVERSIDE - UC Riverside women's basketball coach John Margaritis was suspended without pay for 20 days for violating a school policy, university officials said on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The suspension was the result of an investigation that began earlier this year when several UCR players brought concerns about their treatment by Margaritis to senior administrators at the university, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

School officials did not disclose what policy the coach violated.

During the suspension, Margaritis will not be allowed to have any contact with the players and staff of the Highlanders.

"The only thing I can say here is I'm looking forward to the year and I want to look forward to a season coaching this team,'' the coach said, according to the newspaper. "I can either look back or I can look forward, and I choose to look forward.''

The two-time Big West Coach of the Year has headed the team since 2004. Last year, the Highlanders went 17-16.
