This two-man team completed one of the heats of a race at the Build Your Own Boat Regatta event in 2016. The event will take place again Friday, Aug. 16, at the Temecula Community Recreation Center pool.

Teams of Temecula residents who were quick enough to sign up will participate in the "Build Your Own Boat" Regatta, Friday, Aug. 16, and fulfill their dreams of becoming their own boat captain.

The event is already sold out, but there is a wait list, Wilhe Augustine, city special events coordinator, said.

"Families love to come out and enjoy the friendly competition of the high seas," Augustine said.

Teams have one hour to build their boats, and once they are done, they head over to the pool for the competition.

The teams will be building a vessel out of duct tape and cardboard, and two people will be tasked with climbing into the boat and attempting to cross the Temecula Community Recreation Center pool.

Each team will receive two sheets of cardboard, two rolls of duct tape, a box cutter, a marker and one hour to complete their vessel.

The city has been hosting the event since 2011, and only 25 teams will race in their boats with oars provided by the city.

Once they arrive at the pool, boat competitors will race in heats of four teams until a winner has emerged.

Augustine said about half the boats that enter the competition actually complete the race.

The event will take place from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at the Temecula Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista Road, in Temecula.
