SAN JACINTO - Funding is now in place to construct buildings oriented specifically to science, technology, engineering and math -- STEM -- programs at the two Mt. San Jacinto College campuses, offering enhanced learning experiences in centralized locations, officials said on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

"These buildings have been in our plans for several years, and this state funding will help us finally bring them to fruition for the communities we serve,'' Mt. San Jacinto College Superintendent Roger Schultz said. He said the college is slated to receive $96 million in general obligation bond funding from Proposition 51, approved by voters in 2016, to construct a 36,922-square-foot STEM building at the main campus in San Jacinto, and a 41,865-square-foot complex at the Menifee Valley campus.

"This is a true milestone for Mt. San Jacinto College,'' said Beth Gomez, vice president of Mt. San Jacinto College Business Services. "Dr. Schultz and our team at the college worked hard over the years with legislators to secure Prop. 51 funding. We've been anxious to start these projects.''

In addition to the state money, the college will tap accounts made available under Measure AA, which area voters approved in 2014, authorizing up to $295 million in bond sales for educational projects, according to college officials.

Both STEM buildings will feature lecture rooms, laboratories, study space, and offices. Existing STEM programs are currently spread out in different buildings at the two campuses.

The Menifee Valley project will be slightly more expensive at $52 million, according to Schultz.

No construction timelines were available, but the goal is to have the San Jacinto campus STEM building open for the autumn 2023 term, while the Menifee Valley location should be open sometime in 2024, officials said.
