Multiple fires scorch brush along state highway in Aguanga

Last updated 8/30/2019 at 9:30am

Three brush fires that erupted Thursday, Aug. 22, alongside state Route 371 on the south end of Aguanga blackened 34 acres and were 65% contained.

The non-injury blazes were reported about 4 p.m. nearly 2 miles apart, on the south side of the highway, between Yucca Lane and Wilson Valley Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Twenty-one engine crews from the Riverside County Fire Department, Murrieta Fire and Rescue and the Pechanga reservation deployed to the fires, in addition to four county hand crews, totaling 150 personnel, according to the fire department.

Four Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were making runs on the fires. No homes or other structures were damaged.

California Highway Patrol officers temporarily shut down access to state Route 371 from Highway 79 to the south and Lake Riverside to the north while crews used state Route 371 to stage.

There was no word on how the fires started, or whether they may have been intentionally set.
