Two women charged with robbery, murder after assaulting 84-year-old woman at Pechanga

Candace Townsel and Kimesha Williams were arrested and charged in the death of 84-year-old Long Beach resident Afaf Anis Assad. Investigators said the two Moreno Valley women robbed and assaulted Assad, who later died from her injuries.

TEMECULA - The Riverside County Sheriff's Department on Friday, Sept. 6 announced that two women from Moreno Valley were arrested and charged with robbery and murder in relation to the death of a Long Beach woman found unconscious in a Pechanga Resort Casino bathroom on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Afaf Anis Assad, 84, on Wednesday, Sept. 4 succumbed to injuries that investigators from the Southwest Sheriff's Station said were inflicted upon her by Kimesha Williams, 35, Candace Townsel, 39, both from Moreno Valley.

Deputies were called to the casino at 8 a.m. Aug. 31, responding to a call of a woman found unconscious in a bathroom. An investigation led them to believe she was the victim of an assault and Assad was transported to a local hospital.

"Investigators identified two suspects believed to be involved in the crime," wrote Sergeant Steve Brosche in a report issued by the department on Friday, Sept. 6. "Investigators who had also been closely monitoring Assad's medical status learned she would likely die from her injuries. The Central Homicide Unit was notified and responded to assist with the investigation."

“We are absolutely saddened over this incident and are praying for the victim and her family,” Jared Munoa, President of the Pechanga Development Corporation, said in a statement. “The suspects were quickly identified through surveillance footage and the information was immediately provided to local law enforcement. We pride ourselves on putting the safety of our guests and team members first and are fully cooperating with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice.”

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department worked with the Pechanga Department of Public Safety during this on-going investigation.
